In USA media right now we are in the eye of the Sexual Harassment/Trauma Acquisition Tornado. Within the last month, we have had politicians, Hollywood executives and even news reporters that have been accused of Sexual Harassment and/or Sexual Trauma.
After each new report, the Court of Public Opinion convenes and started giving their thoughts. I TRY so hard not to get caught up in it but unfortunately, every time I am on Facebook or any other social media people are ranting and complaining.
Like I said I try to not to get caught up in it. But I think I read some of it just to see if there are any valid points. But then I realize that it is just the Court of Public Opinion in their shiny gold glittery robes.
Here are some of the things that have got my blood boiling.
“Poor Matt Lauer”
“Why did it take so long for these women to come forward? They were probably busy climbing the corporate ladder.”
“These victims only coming forward because these men have money”
“Why is it only women that are coming forward”
Again the Court of Public Opinion is giving their thoughts without knowing the Mind of a Trauma Survivor. Allow me to invite you inside my mind. I can’t speak for every survivor but I can at least share how my mind works.
- The first time I even mentioned about being molested and rape were 4 & 7 years after it happened because I was so afraid no one would believe me.
- After my gang rape, I was so numb to what happened that I did not realize that I had contracted an STD. So if I could not even be in tuned into my own body do you think I could have been capable of reporting it to anyone.
- After my sexual harassment at Ft Riley, I attempted to report it yet it was blown off that the guy was only joking around.
- I finally started going to therapy after 26 yrs(molestation) 23 years(rape) 17 years (gang rape)
- I don’t think I would have been brave enough to actually come forward until maybe 5 years after being in therapy.
So let’s say with all the info I just gave you that I decided to file charges against my cousin. 3 years ago. And let’s say hypothetically my cousin is now a famous lawyer. I am sure there would be people that would say I waited to make this accusation because he is rich and famous. That has nothing to do with it. It more has to do with the fact that I am now at a healthy place in my healing that I could finally come forward.
So basically the Court of Public Opinion is going off opinion and not fact. They are only seeing it from the side of the accused rather than the side of the victim. Remember there are two sides to every story.
