For so many years there has been the stigma “It did not happen since no one is speaking up” But the crazy thing is that survivors have been speaking up for many years. People just don’t want to acknowledge it. Most people downplay it or even question the survivor on what they did for it to have happened.
Over the years I have found some power pictures of women holding signs about what people have said to them about their sexual assault. These are so powerful. I hope you allow these to resonate with you. I sure did.
I always wonder what my sign would say. Here are a few statements that I remember hearing:
“Are you sure it was Wilber and not Bruce. Wilber came from a middle-class family. Bruce came from a welfare family” -what an aunt said after I told her Wilber raped me.
“I don’t know who you are talking about. It happened so long ago so there is nothing that can be done now”-what my dad said after I told him his friend molested me.
“Well you know that family is a bunch of hillbillies”-what my dad said after I told him Wilber raped me.
SAID NOTHING-my mom’s reaction after I told her about my sexual traumas.
Maybe one day I will be strong enough to write one or more of these and take a picture of it.
Take Care. Much Love
