My Wish-The Story

After my divorce from Dennis, I and the girls spent a lot of time walking to bus stops to catch buses to school, Daycare, and work. So, during this time I had an iPod that I would play songs to pass the time. The up and coming song was “My Wish” by Rascal Flatts. It is such an inspirational song about wishing nothing but happiness and love for others. We sang that song so much. During that hard time, Rascal Flatts was in town. I knew I could not afford to go to the concert at that time. But I vowed that one day I would go to a Rascal Flatts Concert with my girls. One day…

About 2 years ago Lilie bought tickets to see Rascal Flatts in Concert for us. I burst into tears because she knew how important it was for me to see them in concert. I was so excited that we were going to see them. And I was honored that both of my girls would be with me.

Leading up to the concert I wrote letters to Rascal Flatts and Ellen DeGeneres in hopes of getting our story shared. But unfortunately, I did not hear back from either. I did not allow that to steal my sunshine.

So, the day came that we were traveling to Cincinnati to see Rascal Flatts. I was beyond emotional. At that time that day was 9 years in the making. Both of my girls were teenagers so they were in the “My mom embarrasses me all the time” phase. I was trying to keep it together but as the day turned into night and both opening acts finished I was getting so emotional. And the girls were getting embarrassed knowing I would be bursting into tears soon.

The time came that Rascal Flatts was performing “My Wish” and I was overcome with emotions. I was so grateful to be able to see them LIVE in concert and especially because I got to see them with my girls. That night will forever be engraved in my heart. My girls bought me a concert shirt so I could always remember that night.

That initial hardship was over 11 years ago and we have held onto that song. Every time one of us had something to celebrate we have played that song. Many eyes were rolled by my girls who were embarrassed that yet again their mom was bursting into tears. That’s okay those tears have been a reflection of all that we have been through as a family. Divorce, homeless shelter, our first apartment, first car, my graduation from college, Bethanie’s high school graduation, Lilie’s high school graduation, Bethanie beginning her life as a wife and mom, Lilie starting her life as a soldier and me starting my journey as an empty nester and sharing my life story with the world. WOW how far we have come.

This song will continue to be our family anthem song. My wish is that my daughters will be all that they are meant to be. Take Care Much Love
