About 2 years ago when I was at Military Entry Point Station(MEPS) with Lilie I was looking around at different pamphlets that were there just to pass time. I had my first introduction to the SHARP program for the Army when I saw some pamphlets about it. Here is an explanation of the program
The Army’s Sexual Harassment/Assault Response and Prevention (SHARP) program exists so the Army can prevent sexual harassment and sexual assaults before they occur. Our goal is to eliminate sexual harassment and sexual assaults by creating a climate that respects the dignity of every member of the Army family.
I got so emotional seeing that definition about the program that day. You see when my sexual assault happened there was no concrete sexual harassment program in place. So to see proof that things had changed was so powerful.
Now don’t think I totally embraced it as a 180. I looked at the program with both eyes open. That it is a positive step forward. But is it fail proof. Is there a possibility that things could slide through the crack.
Also was this a day too late. And was it a cover-up for my era that so many assaults were covered up or even the victim was blamed somehow. I commend the Army for making effort. But my question is “Is this program respected” Being on different army post with my son in law and Lilie I have heard sarcastic comments saying “Be careful gotta prevent a SHARP complaint” Don’t get me wrong I realize that there are people that will make false accusations to be vindictive toward someone. But I don’t think that should be the mindset that everyone is making false accusations.
So only time will tell if this program is set on a strong foundation or if it will sink in quicksand.
