But You Were A Good Soldier

When I was going through the process of applying for VA Disability I received a letter from the VA denying my claim. Their explanation was “You were a good soldier. You did not have an displinary actions against you”  It’s like they were saying “We are having a hard time believing something happened to you because you did not curse out an NCO or you were not late all the time.”

I wanted so bad to get defensive and just yell at them.  But I stopped for a minute and realized that because I did not have any disciplianry issues that shows I did my best to keep that volcano that was erupting inside my under control.  From the outside it may have looked like I was a good soldier but inside I was getting defensive about everything.  In actuality I was lashing out and getting defensive with others.  I think because I was a good dependable soldier they brushed it off as a isolated incident.

Also this is the “motto” of the military.  Don’t allow outside situations influence your work.  Bottle it up.  Suck it up and drive on.  This is why there are veterans with significant mental health issues.  They have been taught to just put their problems in their rucks sack and move on.  The problem with that mentality is that you have 150lb soldier carry 1,000lbs of problems.  And when they finally realize they can’t carry anymore there is no one there to help them or appointments for Mental Health is 3 months out.

We need to

do better for our veterans

belief them

not make them to jump through hoops to get basically medical care.

not make them feel like a burden.  They served our country.
