Shortly after graduating from high school Bethanie started college at The University of Findlay. Of course, I wanted to show how proud I was. So I bought a “Proud Findlay Mom” sticker for my car.
Just one semester later she decided to leave college. I respected her decision. Over time though every time I looked at that sticker on my car I found myself struggling. Knowing this was her dream college. She worked so hard to get there.
Sometimes I wonder if I wanted it more than she did. Because I never went to college after high school. I think I was living through her to achieve that goal. Because I was a single mom I wanted her to achieve that goal to crush the statistics. But ultimately this is her life and she has to live it the way she wants
I had a similar struggle when Lilie went in the Army. that said, “Proud Army Mom” I bought a boot-shaped magnet. I wanted her to go the whole 20. To retire from the Army. Something that I was not able to do. But that is not what the plan was.
She just got discharged from the Army after serving 8 months 22 days (630 days). It was hard as she was going through the process. I just wanted her to excel in life.
Both of their journeys had different plans that college and the Army. I have realized that there is no need to put a label on what kind of proud Ultimately I am proud of both of my girls. They are 21 and 19 years old and they are spreading their wings and flying no matter what.
I AM BETHANIE’S PROUD MOM
I AM LILIE’S PROUD MOM
Take Care. Much Love.
